COCO LOCO

Who would have guessed all those years ago in Richards Bay that the guitarist from a high school rock band would go on to become one of South Africa’s top DJ talents. Coco Loco’s interest in music from an early age lead him to the discovery of House music, a passion that has stayed with him until now. Bitten by the bug eight years ago, he formed a production company ‘High Society’ along with four other mates and set out to bring his hometown up to date with exciting developments in the international dance music scene. Drawing inspiration from DJ superstars such as Danny Tenaglia, Sasha and Deep Dish, he developed an ear for the underground House sound, yet still maintains a healthy love for rock icons such as Hendrix, Pearl Jam and even the harder sounds of System of a Down and Korn. His initial venture into the world of dance saw High Society staging events in exotic locations such as a crocodile farm, a fishing cabin and even a floating restaurant. Always an innovator and looking to further his career, Coco Loco then set his sights on taking his formula to a larger market where his style of music would find greater exposure, thus his move to Durban.

Whilst his move to a bigger city presented him with many opportunities, it wasn’t always an easy ride and the challenges he faced only motivated him to keep at it and within a few years he had established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Till this day his greatest achievement came in September 2002 when he and long time friend Terry Lyons brought the sensational Funkstar Deluxe (Denmark) to Durban. This amazing street party took place on the streets around the famous SKYYBAR nightclub and attracted a crowd of 3500 people, an event that has certainly made a mark in Durban’s clubbing history.

Soon enough after that he teamed up with Mr White Productions (top production company) and was staging some of the finest events the city had ever seen. These included such mammoth parties as ‘Durban Underground’, ‘Superstar DJ’ and ‘Tim Deluxe 2004’ as well as smaller club-based events aimed at the niche Deep House market like ‘Diamond Knights’, ‘Boy & Girl Next Door’ and ‘Yishi Fonk’. Apart from these efforts he has also had the privilege to work alongside International names such as DJ Rasoul and Kaskade (San Francisco), Funkstar Deluxe (Denmark), Tim Deluxe (U.K), Erhan Sengenc (Turkey), Lawnchair Generals (Seattle), DJ Sammy (Spain), Tom Neville (M.O.S) and most recently with the legendary Brandon Block (UK). As if these names were not enough to confirm him as a rising star, Coco Loco was asked to play the closing set at the Nelson Mandela Aids Benefit concert in Johannesburg in 2004 on a stage which featured such top acts as Danni Minogue, the Human League and Boogie Pimps. 2005 an 2006 has seen him travel all over the country, and is now earning the interest from the media with appearances in local newspaper and magazine publications such as SL, Top Billing, Heat and BPM as well interviews and DJ sets on ETV, 5FM, Good Hope Radio and East Coast Radio. Having made his mark on the scene, he has gone on to release two mix CD’s on the much sought-after USM label; the first being his ‘Deeper Sound of Coco Loco – Deep Trouble’ and the second, recently released ‘Deeper Sound of Coco Loco 2 – Fly By Night’. Both discs have featured the man at his best, with the first one delivering a smooth ‘pre party’ vibe and the latest offering a more chunkier ‘dance-floor’ vibe. With the world at his feet and his sights set on a bright future, he will be touring Mauritius, South Africa and Turkey to promote his latest offering, once more displaying his love for deep – or should that be deep love for – world-class House music.
